When we have newcomers to our business and lifestyle, we are frequently asked, " what should I start with?" And, no matter which of us is asked, we typically reply with " try the peppermint! " Whether you are interested in herbs or essential oils, you cannot go wrong with bringing more peppermint into your life! ( if on naturopathic tinctures, please avoid peppermint until speaking with your healthcare provider) General Info Peppermint is a hybrid plant. This means that it is a genetic combination of watermint (mentha aquatica) and spearmint ( mentha spicata). Being that it is a cross between these two, it carries a wonderful genetic blend of both. It is sweet to the pallet like spearmint and cooling to warm like watermint. The cross yields a high menthol content compared to other mint plants. So less is definitely more when it comes to it's uses. Peppermint is a native plant to most of Europe and some Middle Eastern countries. It will grow well in a well lit area that has shade cast at least 1/3 of the day. It likes a lot of moisture but does not want to sit in constant water. ( We water ours every other day and keep on the back patio with half sun and half shade exposure. ) It will bloom a beautiful light purple to light blue flower. This flower is the part needed and used for distilling a delightful and concentrated essential oil. The leaves and stem are often dried and used in cooking, teas, and herbal poultices. So, like many plants, all of its parts are utilized. Uses and Benefits Please note we recommend obtaining your herbs and essential oils from a known source and if you are going to use internally, verify your essential oil was distilled in a clean manner without alcohols as a by product. We endorse a high grade oil that has a supplementation fact on the side of the bottle and this is a wonderful way to ensure it's safety. Clinically speaking, peppermint oil is recommended for its anti-nausea benefits and soothing effects on the gastric lining and colon because of its ability to reduce muscle spasms. It typically assists smooth muscle tissues. Peppermint has been used for centuries to assist in flavoring unpleasant tasting herbs when used medicinally. Chemically, it allows the body to dilate vessels and demand certain cells perk up and do their jobs. This makes it very useful in allergic reactions and fever/ swelling injuries. Here are a few ideas of how to use the peppermint herb or essential oil in your family's home.. cooking & baking ( of course! ) Add 1-2 drops in a batch of gluten free brownies or your favorite dessert such a ice cream use to brew your own 'tea' - remember to use your herbs fresh or add 1 drop of a high quality oil will replace many cups of herbal tea. make your own bath wash, soap - add 1 cup castile soap, 1/2 cup crushed, dried herb ( or 2-4 drops essential oils) , 1teaspoon coconut oil - combine and store in an air tight container for wonderful wake up shower time! add 2-4 drops in shampoo bottle to invigorate and decrease head tension place 1-2 drops essential oil in palm with 5-10 drops carrier oil of choice ( we use fractionated coconut oil) and massage to back of neck and temples when experiencing head fog/ tension supplement your daily intake - add 1 teaspoon dried herb ( 1-2 drops essential oils) to ice tea or smoothies as peppermint useful in detoxification of the liver, gallbladder, and intestines. make your own natural perfume ( this can also double as a pest repellent ) : add 1-3 drops essential oil to a carrier oil ( I also add in Lavender, wild orange, and vanilla! ) and store in a roller ball for easy application. Plant peppermint and make a perimeter around your home or yard. Bugs of all types including ants, mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and spiders do NOT like peppermint. It wont harm them, just force them elsewhere! place 1/2 to 1 drop essential oil on the tip of your nose and under your tongue to naturally decrease allergic response and open sinuses - can repeat as often as needed throughout the day diffuse essential oil or simmer the dried herb to increase focus and elevate mood As you can see, there are MANY ( and SO many more!!!) ways to use the Peppermint herb or it's essential oil.
